Just curious how many of you decant your wines before consumption. I do own a decanter but only decant when I have company over. Does anyone decant on a regular basis when no company is over?

I do own a nice crystal decanter, but like you only decant if I have friends or family over. Otherwise i'm too impatient to wait and don't feel like doing the cleanup.

I am almost embarrased to say that I rarely decant. Mostly I just dont think about it. Except on a rare ocassion where I have people over specifically to enjoy wine. In that case I will break it out.

I only decant if i know i'm going to drink the entire bottle. Otherwise I dont. And to be honest i dont even if i know we're going to drink the whole bottle. It definitely makes an aprreciable difference though. But if you're not drinking the whole bottle then storing it is really hard after decanting.

I mainly decant when I have guests over and we are opening a new bottle. I'll even decant if its just me and my fiance sometimes, especially if we are planning on having more than just a glass each.

I almost always decant. I think it can help any bottle taste even better!

I hardly ever decant wines. Rare ocasions for having company over, but not even always then.

I've never decanted. My wofe doesn't like wine so a bottle usually has leftovers in our house.

If you don't want to decant because of only drinking a glass or two try one of these:
  • Vinturi: Pour your wine through this to aerate your wine, such as decanting does.
  • Box Wine: Lot's of boxed wines are being produced that are decent and priced very well. One I have not tried yet, but I hear a lot about is Black Box. The cab is supposed to be great!

Just got one of the vinturi aerators so I'm pretty sure I'll be using that as my primary means to "decant." I know a bunch of people that use them and they work very well.

Update: I have been using the Vinturi a lot more. It has been great. Even with a cheap wine, it takes the edge (slight cheap taste that may occur) off.

My wife got me a Vinturi and a nice decanter for Christmas. I haven't used either one yet. I think the Vinturi is a great idea.

I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on the Vinturi. I've been happy with it. Akira has mentioned the same too.

My parents will be visiting us this weekend, I'll guess we'll give the vinturi a test drive then. :)

Used the venturi last night and it works great. It's kinda neat, you can hear it sucking the air in.

Glad it worked for you. I really like it, but NesTek has had some issues with a couple where the wine goes out through those side holes rather than air just going in them.

Yes, I had to return the first one I got. The second one has been working out. Happy to hear that it worked out! They are definitely cool!

I only discovered the wonder of decanting a couple years ago. There are many reds that I believed were bitter and wicked, but have since learned that giving the wine time to breath can make an incredible difference.

The Vinturi looks like a very handy device to have. Apparently Costco doesn't carry them any more, but they are available on Amazon and a number of other shopping sites. I think I'll make it a great stocking stuffer for the wife this Christmas!
